Algeria kept their World Cup knockout stage hopes alive after producing a dramatic comeback victory over Jordan in a tense Group J encounter.
The North Africans recovered from an early setback to defeat the Asian debutants 2-1, ending Jordan’s hopes of making history in their first appearance at the tournament.
Jordan took the lead through Nizar al-Rashdan, putting Algeria under pressure early in the match.
However, Algeria responded strongly as Amine Gouiri restored parity before Nadhir Benbouali completed the comeback with a decisive goal in the 82nd minute in Santa Clara.
The victory moved Algeria level on three points with Austria, setting up a crucial final group match that could determine who advances to the knockout stage.
Algeria now need to defeat Austria in Kansas City on Saturday to secure progression, while both teams remain in contention behind group leaders Argentina.
Argentina currently sit at the top of Group J with six points after defeating Austria 2-0 earlier on Monday.
For Jordan, the tournament journey ends after failing to record a win, with their final match against Argentina in Arlington, Texas, becoming a farewell appearance at the World Cup.
