“I’d Rather Marry A Poor Man Than Build With One!” – Kunle Afolayan’s Daughter Eyiyemi Sparks Heated Debate Over Marriage Standards

The daughter of celebrated Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, Eyiyemi Afolayan, has set social media buzzing after making bold remarks about the kind of man she is willing to marry.

Speaking candidly during an interview, the young actress declared that she would never agree to become a second or third wife, insisting that polygamy is not an option for her under any circumstance.

But that wasn’t all. Eyiyemi also revealed that she has no interest in building wealth with a man from scratch, explaining that many women who sacrifice everything to help men succeed are often forgotten once those men become successful.

Her controversial opinions have since divided social media users, with some praising her honesty while others argued that relationships should be built on partnership rather than fear.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Yoruba, Eyiyemi said she would rather marry a financially modest man than a wealthy one. According to her, wealth sometimes changes people’s behaviour, making some men disrespectful or more likely to cheat.

Despite her preference, she clarified that she would never marry a man who depends entirely on her for survival. She stressed that any man she chooses must be hardworking, responsible and have a legitimate source of income.

Explaining why she refuses to build with a man, Eyiyemi said many men become ungrateful after attaining success and often abandon the women who stood by them during difficult times.

“I can’t be a second or third wife to any man. I also can’t build with a man because some men are ingrates,” she said during the interview.

Eyiyemi is the first daughter of award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan and made her acting debut in Anikulapo, where she played the role of Princess Omowunmi.

Last year, Kunle celebrated her birthday with heartfelt prayers and publicly expressed pride in her achievements. The father and daughter also made headlines after a dance video from the premiere of Anikulapo: The Rise of the Spectre sparked online reactions, though both dismissed the criticism.

Her latest comments have now reignited conversations about modern relationships, financial independence, loyalty and the role of women in building successful marriages.
